Week 3 Theme: KIDS' FOOD BASKET TAKE OVER!
Day 11: Monday, June 22, 2020
Welcome to Camp Legend today! This week Kids' Food Basket is doing a Take Over and sharing some really fun and exciting things. The great thing about this Take Over is that others get to share their expertise with you and you get a break from our normal routine. So, make sure you give a big THANK YOU to Kids' Food Basket for sharing this week!
It is like a week-long (virtual) field trip! One thing will not change though - you will still need to complete a Daily Roll Call each day. Remember, this is what we use to check in with you and see how thing are going.
Below is a short intro video that I made after a recent trip to Kids' Food Basket. Check out some of their behind the scenes spaces! If you are unable to view the video below, please click here (or here for a Safe YouTube link)

1. TOPIC EXPLORATION: What is Kids' Food Basket?
2. Read Aloud: Maddi's Fridge
Listen to our read aloud for today! If you are unable to view the video below, please click here (or here for a Safe YouTube link).
3. STEAM Activity: Treasure Map
Today our STEAM activity will start with doing some brainstorming with a Treasure Map. Think back to the work we have done with the Engineering Design Process and how in the IMAGINE phase, we do brainstorming to help us generate ideas. The brainstorming you will do today will help you other activities this week and help you to think about how the community around you can help towards a solution for a big problem.
In your Daily Roll Call for the Day, you will be asked to share some of your brainstorming ideas. Use the Treasure Map below as your starting point and then use your STEAM skills to take it one step further - design a representation of one of the Business Community or Community sections. For example, if one of the ideas you came up with in your brainstorming was the gas station in your neighborhood, design and create a representation of the gas station using building materials or items you can find around the house or in nature.
Your checklist for today:

Your checklist for today:
- Complete Treasure Map (you may use a scrap piece of paper if you are unable to print it out or use the Interactive Treasure map - you will need a Google account for the Interactive Treasure map as it will ask you to make a copy of the template).
- Look at the Business Community or Community sections. Pick one of the places from your brainstorming.
- Build it!
Bonus Activity: Drawing Competition
Kid's Food Basket hosts a "drawing competition" for their holiday cards each year that they sell. They ask students to draw a winter theme and send in the picture (or a photo of it) and the staff votes for the winner to be the design of their cards that year. Camp Legend campers have received a special invitation to submit a drawing for their holiday card competition. Once finished, you can send your drawing to Kids' Food Basket (please include a note saying they are for the holiday card competition and that you heard about it from Camp Legend). You may send the drawing (done on white paper and not folded if possible) to Kids' Food Basket. If you are a Godfrey-Lee student, Mrs. Wood can collect the drawings from you. The mailing address for Kids' Food Basket is below. Cards must be sent to Kids' Food Basket by July 13, 2020.

4. Important: RolL Call!
When attending camp, it is important to know who showed up and participated for the day - just like at school when your teacher takes attendance. Part of our roll call at Camp Legend is to not only know you participated today, but also to see what you created as part of the STEAM activity.
Note: If you are unable to attach your picture of your creation today on the Daily Roll Call form, please feel free to email it to me directly at [email protected] and I will include to be displayed on the Look and Learn below. |
As part of the daily Roll Call, we want to check in and see how you are doing. Sometimes things just don't go our way or are going really well - and this can affect how we think and work, and that is ok! You will see the images below on the Roll Call form - simply pick the one that best describes how you were feeling today!
5. Bonus Video
Kid President has shared many inspiring videos over the years. He even has one on fighting childhood hunger!
If you are unable to view the video below, please click here (or here for a Safe YouTube link).

6. Look and Learn!
When you submit your attendance in the daily Roll Call, you are asked to share a picture of what you created today for the STEAM activity. When you submit a picture, it will show up below (it may take a few seconds and you might have to refresh your page). I know I LOVE seeing what you are making, and I am sure you are curious what others have created! So, make sure you complete your attendance (Roll Call) for the day and submit a picture of what you created!
